How do medical schools view an interdisciplinary degree?

January 13th, 2009 by admin

I recently couldn’t decide on whether to major in English or Art as an undergraduate. I found an interdisciplinary program at my university that emphasizes theatre, english, and art! I’m really excited about it because I can do it all now and not have to be an undergrad for 6 years.

Here’s the dilemma:
How do Medical Schools view interdisciplinary degrees? Do they look down on it? I was planning to double major in the interdisciplinary program AND accounting. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

medical schools view those degrees as totally acceptable, as long as you have the required pre-requisites. You’ll have to have biology, chemistry, organic, physics, etc. These are absolutely required, so you’ll have to do a post-bac if you don’t have them after your interdisciplinary degree. If you have them and have a good MCAT score, they are considered just as good. There are plenty of people in my school who have philosophy, religion, even dance degrees. So as long as you have the required classes (plus you will want to have some research experience, etc to show you are interested in medicine) then you will be in fine shape.

How competitive are medical schools in Australia compared to the US?

January 11th, 2009 by admin

I'm an undergraduate student in the US planning on attending a medical school here or possibly in Australia.. does anyone know how the two compare? I will have a degree by the time I am ready to apply to med school so I am interested in the graduate programs there.. does anyone know if med schools in Australia require pre-med courses like the US and if so what are they? Any info you can give me will help, thanks!

G'day,

Unfortunately you did not mention the area of study that you intend to do for your graduate course. To find out the course that you are taking and where it is offered, I suggest you to go to IDP Education Australia website (www.idp.edu.au). IDP is an organisation that gives information to international students who wants to continue their study in Australia. The information abt tuition fee and requirement will be available from the universities' website. Once decided on the uni, fill in the application form and send it together with certified copy of your academic qualification. The process will take abt 2-3weeks, depending on the time of the year.

Hope this helps. Good luck for your study and welcome to Australia :)

What are the best online schools for studying medical and legal transcription?

January 9th, 2009 by admin

I need somehing accredited where I can work at home when I finish these courses. I am in the Nashville, TN area.

There are three very good schools for medical transcription known as "the big/top 3." They are as follows:

1) M-Tec
2) The Andrews School
3) CareerStep

CareerStep training can be taken via Everett Community College in Everett, Washington and it can also be taken through San Juan College in San Juan, New Mexico. If you take the CareerStep training through a community college that offers it, you can get Financial Aid if you qualify. The only drawback is that you will have to take the classes based on the college's school/academic year rather than your own self-paced schedule.

I don't know quite as much about legal transcription, but I do know that U.S. Career Institute offers training; the link is below:

I hope the above is helpful.

What are some of the best medical schools to go to?

January 7th, 2009 by admin

Whatever medical school in the U.S. you can get into and will learn the most and be happy at. At the end of medical school, everyone gets an M.D. regardless of the school.

If you want to go to the more prestigious medical schools, then Harvard and Johns Hopkins are on the list. But once again, the learning atmosphere may not necessarily suite everyone. Hopkins used to have the reputation of being very cut-throat among classmates and it seems to still have that reputation according to my cousin who attends there currently. I went to a big state school for medical school (known for football) and I was happy there.

what the difference between medical research schools and primary care?

January 5th, 2009 by admin

I'm currentely a sophorome in HS and I aspire to become a pediatritian, but when I look for the best medical schools there is research medical schools and primary care.
* And can you please tell me what I should be doing in HS to have a good record for medical schools? And what major pediatritian would be on? Thanks!

Research is lab and theoretical work. Developing vaccines, etc.

Primary care work it clinical practise, treating patients.

Some schools are rated better for research like Harvard, some better for clinical like UCSF or Stanford.

In clinical practise you still have to do research work, just not as much. More than half your work is clincial and the rest research.

In research one would imagine it's just the opposite.

Pediatrican is 4 years extra schooling after you finsihed medical school and internship. So it's a 12-13 year invesntment in college time.

You need to take lab biology, chemistry, math through trig, statistics if it is offered.

If you're going to a private universith 2 years foreign language is usually required.

What are the best online schools for Medical Billing & Coding?

January 3rd, 2009 by admin

How long does it take to get your certificate? Is it a hard career to go into? I've also thought about Pharmacy Technician. I would like a school that offers financing and doesn't take years to complete.

I don't believe that online schools are seen as reputable like traditional schools such as the local county vo-tech school or community college (perhaps non-credit course). Some community colleges offer online courses as well. Please do consider looking into the lesser expensive program as to not have to be stuck with such a large bill if having difficulty finding work in that field. And please make sure that the program is accredited with a reputable organization within the medical billing field. I've heard that there are not too many jobs for the medical biller or coder (or medical assistant).

For US colleges including community colleges: www.utexas.edu/world/univ
