Should I just go to a medical program at USF or be a pre-med at UF??!? PLEASE READ?

January 7th, 2009 by admin

What do you think is better? USF (university of south florida) has a 7 year medical program… I was accepted. Do you think it is better to go there since you are guaranteed admission into medical school or should I go to a more prestigious school such as UF or U of Miami and try to get into a better medical school.
Does medical school rankings really matter? USF is ranked at 74 while U of Miami and UF have medical schools ranked in the 40's (depends on which site you check)….

Thanks! Also, does it help to go to a good medical school if you want to get into a touch residency…? I want to become a dermatologist.

You still need to maintain a certain GPA to be accepted into the medical school, but definitely go there, if a doctor is what you want to do. If a doctor is what you truly want to be, there is no easier path and nothing closer to a guarantee than a 7 year program like that. Going to University of Miami and UF will not help you get into medical school. They are mediocre schools as far as medical schools are concerned.

As far as being a dermatologist, don't worry about that right now. People change their field while in medical school often, let alone being still in high school.

Serious answers ONLY: What qualities make a good doctor?

January 3rd, 2009 by admin

The best rankings come from the patients who have actually EXPERIENCED the clinical care treatment from doctors, because patients are the ones who don't get paid by the medical community or the health insurance companies.

So I really need to know what SPECIFIC list of QUALITIES (besides the education and what prestigious schools they graduated from) do you, the general public, require a doctor to possess before you entrust your life or your children's lives to them.

And also, what is YOUR definition or criteria of TOP CUSTOMER SERVICE in a doctor's office?

Please, serious answers ONLY. I really need to know. I hereby thank you for putting your thoughts and efforts into this.

I think that it is important for your doc to really listen to what you are telling them.. not just come in get the basics and then give you so long take care…… Listening is very important.

chance?? what do u guys think??

January 1st, 2009 by admin

i applied to my school's medical technology program. my references were great. my personal statement and interview were ok. but i do have experience in clinical lab. and currently working in one, in fact the lab i work in is actually part of the program/univeristy. what do you guys think of my chance of admission?? its pretty competitive, i wont know the decision til couple weeks later

I graduated from the same university two years ago with a micro degree. I'm applying back to the university as a 5th year to earn a 2nd degree in med tech. so yea, I pretty much stated that I goofed off during school and that I've really grown to love this profession/field in my statement. today my manager told me that he got some "inside stuff" and he hinted that i'm already in….he said he saw the rankings of the applicants and that i was pretty "up" there….still….dont wanna jinx it =)

from what i hear, admitting that you may not have taken school as seriously as possible is important in your application. i'm applying for my masters in psych, but my gpa sucks.

i think it sounds like you have a great chance. especially with the experience. good luck!

CSULB Economic Stabilization Act Panel Discussion

December 30th, 2008 by admin

Housing prices are crashing. Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, and Washington Mutual, have been acquired for pennies on the dollars. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are under Federal Government conservatorship. U.S. Commercial banks have tightened lending standards, and a credit crunch threatens global financial markets. All of this stokes fears of an economic slowdown that many believe could result in a deep recession for the U.S. and the rest of the world.

The U.S. Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve Board developed a plan for a $700 billion bailout of Wall Street, and this bailout will be discussed by a panel of experts on the CSULB campus.

The panel will discuss what caused the crisis, what the bailout means, what the implications of the bailout are, and how Main Street, not just Wall Street, is affected.

Queens U or McGill or Waterloo for Bio/Comp-Sci?

December 30th, 2008 by admin

I have a 91 average in a Canadian high school known for being difficult, plus a huge variety of extracurriculars, so it looks like I’ll be shoe in for any of those three. I plan to do a double major in Biology and Computer Science so I can keep my options open just in case I don’t make it to medical school; seems like a versatile degree not many will have so I’ll be a valuable commodity in hospitals and research labs and such. Anyways, here’s my dilemma: I don’t know which of those three to go to! Right now, I’m leaning towards Queens, but haven’t made up my mind. As far as I can tell (from my research) Waterloo has the best comp-sci program (but lacks a medical school so their bio program can’t be all that great), Queens has a nice mix of the two (plus the comp-sci undergrads use a language I’m very familiar with, it’s close to home, and they have the world’s leading computer surgery expert), and McGill has the best bio (along with being in Montreal!). I’ve talked to people at every school and still can’t make up my mind.

Here are my questions:
1. Can you give some general advice?
2. What are their international reputations like? Have people in the States heard of them? Will American employers be impressed or acknowledge they’re good schools?

From what I hear McGill has the best academic reputation but Queen’s isn’t far behind. They were almost dead-locked in this year’s rankings. I’m really struggling here.
Don't follow his link it asks you to download a video codec from a sketchy site to run his video. I'm not stupid.

I like your idea of a bio/comp-sci degree. Good way to specialize yourself.

I believe in that combo, the more important one is comp-sci as comp-sci is creeping into everything. You seem very concerned with employment and what employers think. University of Waterloo definitly has the best comp-sci program and it also has the best co-op program in North America, every 4 months you are on a 4 month work term with an employer. With atleast 2 years of work experience for a undergrad degree (i’m sure you could do more for a double major) you will put yourself into a position to be known before you graduate and be offered a job. Having a medical school does not relate all that much to the biology program; waterloo has a strong bio-med program. Doing a double major at waterloo will not be an easy task, but I believe because of the comp-sci quality and reputation, and the employer exposure you should choose Waterloo.
