I really want to go to NYU, Opinions?

January 13th, 2009 by admin

Ok so I have made my college list but I feel Like I really want to go to NYU. I don't see my chances of getting an IVY league but NYU is one of those just outside IVY really good schools. Especially since i want to go for medicine. plus I love the idea of dorming in the city with the open city campus. I held an internship at the NYU Medical center in a laboratory for 6 weeks over the summer and i am still currently enrolled. So I have my principle investigators recommendation and a soon to be published research paper through NYU. For current students or alumni did you like your NYU experience, was dorming in the city a lot of fun? What are my chances? I've seen the school, ive partially worked there i think its nice i love the city i want to get people ideas and my chances

GPA: 3.6673
Weighted GPA: 4.0039
SAT (1st time): 1860
SAT II Biology: 640
SAT II World History: 630
AP Biology Exam: 4
AP English Language Exam: 4
AP United States History Exam: 4
Rohm and Haas Electronics Materials Invitational Science Fair – 1st Place, 2007, 2nd Place, 2006, 2nd Place, 2005
Long Island Science Congress – Placement of Honors, 2005, Placement of High Honors, 2006, Placement of Honors, 2007
Certificate of Honor: Placement in National Spanish Examination Top 10, 2005 -2007, LISEF participant, 2006-2007, Exemplars Honor Society, 2005-2006, Spanish Honor Society, 2006-2007
Student Science Conference in Salt Lake city Utah
Accompanied students on a trip to the Liberty science center to see live open heart surgery and made a powerpoint for teaching

I suggest you go for it. I applied to NYU and got accepted ( I decided to go elsewhere) but it has a great campus in a great area of NY! The only thing is that NYU has gotten extremely slective I had a 4.2, a 2120 on my SAT, a 31 ACT, and all 5 on 7 AP exams and I was accepted but without a scholarship which is why I ultimately didnt go because another univerity just as prestigious offered me a partial scholrship. But youdefinielty seem like you qualify and you have already done a program at the school and visited the campus so I suggest you go for it (look at a few other schools as well to keep your options open) GOOD LUCK!

Should I enrol at NYU or Boston University?

January 11th, 2009 by admin

I am having trouble choosing between the two. See my question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AouET2opTXfQfUNMpD5QcjtIzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20080409041811AA3EpTF

Some other factors I would like to get information on are:

1) What percentage of students who apply to medical school from BU and NYU get accepted into med school? I want to compare data from the two universities.

2) Between NYU's Morse Academic Plan and BU's Core Curriculum, which do you recommend as a general education and liberal arts track?

3) If I choose not to live in University housing at NYU during my freshman year, can I still get housing in subsequent years if I enrol?

4) Has BU done away with their University Professors Program or is it still possible to apply to the program after I matriculate?

I would like answers from current students/ alumni or anyone associated with the universities. Thank you.

1. This is a question to ask the admission's office

2. I would definitely recommend NYU's Morse House Academic Plan

3. Yes and No… They most likely give to people who have been in housing already, and to the new freshman. I would just go for the first year, since an apartment is alot more money. I would rather live in an apartment too, but they recommend you stay on campus freshman year. I would recommend 3rd avenue north, one of the two freshman apartment style homes. I like this one the best!

http://www.nyu.edu/housing/residence.halls/third.avenue.north/

4. Yes it is still there: http://www.bu.edu/uni/about/index.html

I would recommend NYU. I have not heard great things about Boston University. My teacher's daughter went there, and she thought it was "ok". An alumni here on Yahoo, had a terrible experiance, and I was shocked! NYU is going to be better for you. I have been looking into NYU for some time now, and know alot about it. That is where I would like to go. NYU doesn't really have a campus, but really the campus is NYC. I prefer NYC than Boston. NYU is also more well known than Boston University. NYU is also very diverse. I would have to say one of the diverse universities in the U.S. You will see everyone from around the world. I think NYU is better for your major, also. For medical school, Cornell would be the best! It is also in the city (Cornell's Medical Center is in NYC, main campus in Ithica, NY.), just get alot of experiance in hostipals! All together NYU is your best bet! I have always heard great things about NYU. It is America's number 1 dream school! Good Luck!

Why does it matter what Medical School you go to?

January 9th, 2009 by admin

Do you get an advantage in anyway paying so much money to go to places like NYU Med and Harvard med? Will your paycheck as a doctor increase? My dream is to go to NYU Med, but now that I thought about it.. does it matter where I go?

It probably doesn't as long as you get the right education. going to top med. schools though may increase your chances of getting a job. If you graduate at the top of your class from a well-known school, then it really does look good.

class for premed?

January 7th, 2009 by admin

Hi i plan to go to medical school, however I am uncertain about the classes I will take in my undergraduate college. Should I take hard science classes? or take easy ones and get good grades. I especially want to get into NYU Medical School in Manhattan(I live near it!!) Also should I take the honors program at St Johns University(which I plan to attend for undergrad) to be competitive? I don't know if I should really take other advanced science classes. Please assist me! Thanks.

Try a regular class first if you can keep up with that EASILY go advanced

Do you think my sister will get accepted to medical school with these grades? best answer = 10 points!!!?

January 5th, 2009 by admin

My older sister is planning to become a pediatrician just like me. She is 22 with a 3.4 GPA, 5 letters of recommendation, a passing score of 36/45 on her MCAT and on the writing section of the MCAT she got a Score or R and the writing scores range from J-T, she also graduated from Hunter College in NY with a bachlors of science. She applied for NYU, Columbia, Cornell and a few others.

the best answer will get 10 points!!!!

I don’t see her getting into NYU or Columbia, but there are certainly schools that will accept someone with those grades and scores. I would encourage her to look at second-tier schools, where she would do quite well.

is it ok to be an anthropology major at nyu while on a premed track?

January 3rd, 2009 by admin

I really want to go to medical school but i am really confused on what i should major in as a freshmen next yr at nyu. i thought i was going to major in bio but a bunch of people told me not b/c my gpa wont be as high. Please someone give me advice preferably any students currently in medical school

Yep, it's fine. Just take the Pre-Med curriculum. You can also major in biology…med schools will look at your science GPA, GPA in your major, and your cumulative GPA. Even if you major in Anthro and your GPA is higher, they will still look at your pre-med classes and calculate THAT GPA seperate from your overall GPA. All 3 GPA calculations had better be high (3.6 or higher).

Being an anthropology major myself, there are definite advantages to opting for the Anthro major (especially the biological anthro major):
-Smaller department, so you will be able to get med school recommendations really easily
-Will prepare you with a solid science background you will need for med school (but you won't take Ochem or Physics for Anthro, so you will need to take these extra classes)
-Good balance of science and social education–that way, you don't get tired of having too much of one thing. My problem with being a bio major was that it was too much science all at once for me, and I wanted to learn about social aspects of life as well.
-Anthro is like rolling 5 majors into one. You can study cultural anthro, biological anthro, or archaeology–lots of options (some schools also include sociology in the anthropology department, but anthropology is different from sociology in that biological anthropology and archaeology are highly science based–so all of our conclusions about social structure, for instance, have to be based in scientific data–unlike alot of sociology)

Disadvantages:
-If you don't go to med school, you won't be able to find a job in anthropology with a BS or BA…you will at LEAST have to get a masters.

Good luck!
