Conflict Continues in Thailand

December 21st, 2008 by admin

CHAN:
The situation in Thailand remains tense.  Protestors are angry about the death of a civilian at a demonstration earlier this week. Over 2,000 anti-government protesters take to the streets Thursday, demanding the resignation of the government.

STORY:
The 2,000 anti-government protesters held a peaceful demonstration in Bangkok’s shopping district on October 9, demanding the government resign after bloody clashes between police and protesters earlier this week.

The protesters chanted “Get Out!” calling on Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat to resign. The march came a day after doctors at Bangkok’s top medical school launched a campaign to deny medical services to police or politicians involved in the clashes on October 7, which killed two people and injured morethan 400 in the worst street violence in 16 years.

The protesters led by the so-called People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) group vowed to continue their rally until the government will step down.

Somchai told reporters that the government will setup a committee to investigate the October 7 clash.

[Somchai Wongsawat, Thailand Prime Minister]:
“The incident that occurred – it was not the government’sintention to hurt anyone. We hope this committee that we set up will bring the truth of how the incident happened. I’m confident the truth will answer all the questions.”

At least six people have lost their limbs in clashes with police. Police say they were using only tear gas to disburse the crowd, but the protest leaders said many of the injuries and one of the deaths were caused by police explosives.

Meanwhile, PAD protest leaders are facing prison terms. Thailand’s Court of Appeals said nine arrested PAD leaders had not committed treason, which is a capital offense. But the court did issue new warrants against the leaders saying they might have committed public order offenses. These carry up to seven years in prison.

The charges result from the actions of PAD protesters who, armed with golf clubs, stakes and machetes, stormed a state television station, broke into several ministries and overran the prime minister’s official compound.
